A brief set as part of a 'wilderness project' at A-Level, where the aim was to find unique and innovative ways of representing & sourcing inspiration from what surrounds us. We were tasked with designing, manipulating and managing a repetitive pattern that stayed interesting despite its repetition.

While the brief sought a versatile pattern, the ultimate outcome was intended to be used as a concept design for a front cover of the contemporary design magazine, Wallpaper, and our designs were to be suiting to such a setting.

WILDERNESS PROJECT

BASE PATTERN

Repetition of the above illustration results in an intricate but bold pattern where the flat, monochrome colouring transfers well to a variety of mediums: apparel, accessories and such.

Its flatness, however, is not ideal for independent print design and thus is not suiting for the Wallpaper cover.

Enhancements and additions will help the pattern flourish and give it more depth; much more suiting to a design magazine front cover.

TEXTURES
COLOUR
FINAL

The addition of textures with various layer blending modes gives the composition much more depth: almost like a painting on canvas. While tying the design together as a final piece, it also shows a hint of the process of its creation. the mix of sharp vector images and untidy physical textures create a striking contrast that is well suited to the contemporary setting, despite laying its foundations in a simple, repetitive and flat pattern.

The full composition works independently as a print as well as on the cover, and the flat pattern transfers to a wide range of mediums, particularly in fashion: its flatness is ideal for material that is constantly in motion.

The flat intricacy of the base pattern, as well as its simple colouring, means it can be altered to suit a plethora of settings, a key request of the brief: versatility.
